Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (2010) is a Tamil language Indian drama film written and directed by Vasantha. The film is an adaptation of the 2008 Israeli documentary Waltz with Bashir, which is based on Israeli director Ari Folman's experiences as a combat soldier during the 1982 Lebanon War. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya tells its story in flashback and begins with a narration of what happened to Folman as he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after his experience. The story then shifts to events that occurred in 1990s Chennai, where two young men reminisce about their childhood together and how they became friends before they subsequently drift apart over time. The film was released on 20 June 2010. The film's soundtrack album and background score were composed by Snehan. During Karthik's childhood, he happened to be the only rich kid in the neighbourhood. He would frequently visit Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya with his mother (Nandhini). A few years later, he meets Gokul (Jiiva) with whom he shares many memories. Gokul's mother (Gayatri) worked as a nurse in a hospital where Karthik's mother was admitted for a surgery. Gokul and Karthik soon become good friends and the bond of friendship between them started growing day by day. As they grow up, Gokul and Karthik start to get involved in different things in life. Gokul becomes a school teacher while Karthik pursues higher studies in America. While Karthik comes back after completing his studies, Gokul is shown to be living with his mother who is constantly ill. On one occasion, the duo go out for an evening walk where they spot actress Mansoor Ali Khan (Jaya Seal) with her husband (Naveen Chandra) and rickshaw driver (Srinath). When Karthik tells Gokul that the actress is his dream girl, he ignores it and says that he will get to work in movies like Mansoor Ali Khan and make a few lakhs extra in his lifetime. As they grow up, Gokul and Karthik start to get involved in different things in life. Gokul becomes a school teacher while Karthik pursues higher studies in America. While Karthik comes back after completing his studies, Gokul is shown to be living with his mother who is constantly ill.
